Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka, “red”)

Kenai River Salmon FishingThere are two distinct runs of sockeye salmon on the Kenai River. The first run (June 11 through July 1), is bound for the Russian River and is slightly smaller in number then the second run (July 15 through August 10), which is bound for several streams throughout the area. Kenai River sockeye salmon average 9 pounds and put up and excellent fight! Full of healthy omega-3’s, and absolutely delicious, fishing for sockeye salmon is a must-do on any Alaskan vacation. Kenai River Trout Anglers will do their best to help you get your limit!

Silver Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch, “coho”)

Kenai River Silver SalmonThere are several pulses of silver salmon on the Kenai River. The first fish begin to arrive in late July, with a more significant pulse beginning in mid-August. A final pulse moving in through October. These bright chrome fish range from 9 to 15 pounds, and are very aggressive! Kenai River silvers will often times go airborne after striking, and will repeatedly acrobate out of the water making for an extremely exciting fight! Even the most experienced angler’s skills will be put to the test! Oh, and by the way, they are also superb eating.
